Take me back in your arms, Manila

Call it corny but I think I was born to be a mother. I've tried it all- swinging single, married mother, single mother, and some married man's other. After all the ups and downs, I'm glad I've floated back down to this state of motherhood. It's (usually!) quiet and calm here and I'm glad the rest of my days will be like this.

I say "usually quiet" because there are the inevitable challenges to motherhood. But one thing I'm glad about is the fact that I'm back in Manila raising my 3 American-born children. Aside from the obvious perks of Manila life (yaya, driver, extended family) I now enjoy the greatest benefit of all- the opportunity to enjoy being a mom.

I did not have this in the US because everything was so hectic, tiring and stressful. I remember wishing that each day was over so that I could finally rest. I used to say that I preferred living in the US because of the cleanliness, discipline, security and safety. I don't think I can say the same now.

It's been two years since I returned from San Francisco and each day is precious and priceless. I enjoy being with my kids and, as important, I'm finding reasons to enjoy living in Manila.

During a recent trip to the US I realized that my home is now in the Philippines. As I stepped off the plane in NAIA 2, the unpleasant odor of Manila air greeted me, but never was I happier to be back home.
